Lagos to Abuja in detail: who may fly it, and from where
The two airports are 276 nautical miles apart, about 511 km in a straight line. On a light or midsize jet that is a little over an hour in the air, and roughly 1h 10m from door closed to door open.
Only a Nigerian operator can carry you between the two
Nigerian cabotage rules do not allow a foreign-registered aircraft to collect passengers in one Nigerian city and set them down in another. A jet that flew you in from London therefore cannot take you on to Abuja.
The domestic leg has to be flown by a Nigerian-registered aircraft whose operator holds an Air Operator Certificate from the NCAA. Many privately owned jets in Nigeria fly on a private non-commercial permit, which does not allow them to be chartered. The NCAA suspended ten operators in 2024 over exactly this, so we only place the leg with AOC holders and check the certificate covers the aircraft quoted.
The terminals at each end
In Lagos, private departures leave from the business aviation side of Murtala Muhammed rather than the domestic terminals. The Luxaviation ExecuJet facility there runs a 4,700 m² hangar and its own apron with direct runway access. In Abuja you arrive at the General Aviation Terminal at Nnamdi Azikiwe, away from the scheduled flights. Because the flight is domestic, there is no customs or immigration on either side.
Which aircraft, and the same-day return
For up to six or seven people a light jet such as the Phenom 300E is the efficient choice. A midsize such as the Hawker 900XP adds standing room and baggage space, and is a type Nigerian operators fly widely. Larger delegations move to a Legacy-class heavy jet.
