Neighbourhoods to stay in
- Midtown and Central Park South: the Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue holiday windows on foot, with the park next door.
- Upper East Side: residential, quiet and close to the museums along Museum Mile.
- Tribeca and SoHo: downtown hotels, restaurants and galleries, with more space and less tourist traffic.
- West Village and Chelsea: low-rise streets, restaurants and the gallery district.
Pick the area where you will spend the evenings: crossing Manhattan by car in December takes longer than the map suggests.
Which neighbourhood suits whom
Midtown suits first-time visitors and families who want the tree, the windows and the theatres on foot, though it is the most crowded part of the city in December. The Upper East Side suits couples and museum-goers who want a quiet evening, and it is a short walk to Central Park. Tribeca and SoHo suit guests who prefer a downtown hotel and restaurants within a few blocks. The West Village and Chelsea suit anyone who wants low-rise streets, a dinner on foot and the galleries. Hotel rates in all of them peak around Christmas and New Year, so book early.
The holiday season
Rockefeller Center's website lists the tree arriving on 7 November 2026 and the Tree Lighting Ceremony on 2 December 2026. The Fifth Avenue windows and the rink at the Center are the classic sights of the month. Hotel rates peak in the weeks around Christmas and New Year, so book early. For a warmer winter base, see Miami in winter.
What is on, November to January
The Rockefeller Center tree arrives on 7 November 2026, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony is on 2 December. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes runs from 4 November 2026 to 4 January 2027 at Radio City Music Hall; we arrange the best seats on request. New York City Ballet's Nutcracker at Lincoln Center normally runs from late November into early January; the third-party listings we found disagree on the final date, so confirm it with the company. On New Year's Eve the ball drops in Times Square at midnight, but street access there is crowded and controlled. We confirm the 2026 arrangements closer to the date.
Madison Square Garden: the Knicks, the Rangers and concerts
Madison Square Garden is the city’s indoor arena. The New York Knicks play their NBA home games there through the 2026/27 season, and the New York Rangers their NHL home games. We arrange premium seats and hospitality game by game, and for concerts and events at the Garden, on request: tell us the date, the party and the kind of seat, and we confirm what is available in writing before you commit. Seats are bought for the date and transferred to your account. Group and corporate bookings on request. See NBA access, our guide to Madison Square Garden and the events calendar.
Dining reservations
Prime tables in New York book out ahead of the holidays. We request tables through each restaurant's own reservation channels and confirm back to you. You can see how it works on our restaurant booking page. We do not list New York venues on this site, so tell us what kind of evening you want and we will propose options. December is the hardest month for a prime table. Restaurants set their own booking windows, deposits and cancellation terms, and the best tables go first to the people who ask earliest. Send us your dates and the kind of evening you want a few weeks ahead, and we pass on each restaurant's terms before we confirm. Flexible times help, and large groups and private rooms need the longest lead time.
Flying private to New York
Our private jet to New York page sets out the airports and the route. Teterboro, about 12 miles from Midtown, is the private-aviation hub, with Westchester for upstate and Connecticut. London to New York is around seven and a quarter hours in an ultra-long-range aircraft, and our market guide for the route starts at about £85,000 one way. Your fixed all-in quote depends on aircraft, date and positioning. See also our private jets overview.
Getting around
Manhattan is easiest by car in winter, and the airports are well connected to the city by road. Teterboro to Midtown is usually a short drive outside rush hour, but snow and holiday traffic can change that, so we arrange the car in advance and track your arrival. We also suggest booking theatre and concert evenings early in December.
Before you travel
If you are combining New York with a winter break in Europe, see our Alps winter 2026/27 guide. For travel to Miami in early December, see our Miami winter season page.
What to book first
Book the hotel first, since rates and rooms in the weeks around Christmas and New Year move fastest. Then request the dinners that matter and the theatre or concert evenings, which you can book through official channels ahead of time, and leave a few evenings free for the weather. Fix the airport transfer last, once your flight times are known, and ask for a driver who will track your arrival, because snow and holiday traffic change the drive from Teterboro or the other airports.
How we help
We choose the neighbourhood and hotel for your group, request tables through each restaurant's own channels, book theatre and concert evenings through official channels, and meet you with a car at the airport. For flights across the Atlantic see the private jet cost by route guide and the private jet charter page.
