Madison Square Garden is one of the few arenas in the world that people plan a trip around, and the first question is usually how premium seats work. It is the home of the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers, and it hosts concerts and major events through the year. For a first-time visitor, the question is rarely whether to go. It is how tickets, premium seating and hospitality actually work, what you are buying, and how far ahead to ask. This guide explains it in general terms. It is not a price list and it does not describe any particular package.
The venue in brief
Madison Square Garden stands in Midtown Manhattan above Penn Station, at 4 Penn Plaza, and is operated as a multi-purpose arena. Basketball and ice hockey are the two regular tenants: the Knicks play in the NBA and the Rangers in the NHL, and both play their home games at the Garden. Between home dates the building stages concerts and other live events, which is why the calendar can be crowded, especially from autumn to spring. Because dates are set by the teams, the leagues and the promoters, we always check a date against the official schedule before we confirm anything.
What premium seating usually means
At a large arena, premium seating is a broad term. In general it covers seats closer to the action or with a better view than the standard bowl, seats with access to a lounge or dining area before and after the event, and private suites for a group. What a given seat includes can differ by event, and it can change from one season to the next. For that reason we describe the categories in general and confirm the specifics for your date in writing, rather than quoting from memory. If a detail is not yet confirmed for the event you want, we say so and tell you what we are waiting on.
The useful questions to ask for any date are practical ones. Where exactly is the seat, and what is the view? Is food and drink included, or does the ticket give access to a space where you buy them? What time does the lounge open and close? Is the seat part of a block, so that your party sits together? A good answer is specific and in writing.
Suites and groups
A suite is a private room with its own seating overlooking the court or the ice, normally taken by a group or a company. For a family, a birthday or a client evening, a suite takes away the question of moving a large party through a busy building. The trade-off is that suites are limited in number and are shared out around the calendar, so the best dates are asked for first. Groups of nine or more are handled on request. Tell us the party size, whether you want to sit together in one place and whether the occasion is social or corporate, and we work from there. Our corporate hospitality page sets out how larger bookings are organised.
How the booking works
The process is the same for every event. You choose the date, or give us a few and ask which is best. We check the official schedule, confirm what is available and describe it in writing. Only when you have read it and agreed do we go ahead. Seats are bought for the date, through official channels, and transferred to your account, so you hold them in your own name rather than receiving a printed voucher from an intermediary. Hospitality is enquiry only: nothing is listed for self-service booking, and nothing is guaranteed until we confirm it.
Two practical points help. First, make sure the name on the account is the name of the person who will bring the party, as the tickets sit there. Second, decide how guests will receive them. Digital tickets are usually shared by the account holder, so agree in advance who will do it and when.
Knicks and Rangers games
For a Knicks or Rangers home game, premium seats are asked for game by game. The regular season runs from the autumn to the spring, and the matches that people want most are weekend evenings and games against the best-known opponents. If your trip is fixed, ask about every home date that falls inside it and compare. If your trip is flexible, choose the game first and the flights second. Tip-off and puck-drop times are set by the leagues and can be moved for broadcast reasons, so we reconfirm the time closer to the date and tell you if it changes. See our NBA access page for how basketball bookings are handled.
Concerts and other events
Concerts at the Garden follow the same logic with one difference: the date is set by the promoter and there is often one night, or a short run, rather than a season. Seat categories vary with the stage layout, and the view from the side of a stage is very different from the view from the front. Ask for the layout and the seat position for the specific show. For major tours the best seating can be limited quickly after it goes on sale, so tell us early which artist you want to see and which cities you are willing to travel to.
Venue tours
If there is no game or concert in your dates, the organiser offers guided tours of the building. The Garden tour lasts about an hour and goes behind the scenes, and Radio City Music Hall has its own tour of the auditorium and foyers. The same organiser also runs a tour of The Chicago Theatre. Group tours can be arranged on request, and tour availability can change, so we check the current position before you plan around one.
Planning the evening around it
Arrive in good time. Security checks at the entrances take time on busy nights, and Penn Station and the streets around it are crowded in the hour before the event. If an event states a dress code, we tell you in advance. Dinner before an evening game works best close to the arena, and we request tables through each restaurant's own reservation channels. See our New York guide for neighbourhoods, hotels and the winter season, and our New York Christmas guide if you are travelling in the holidays.
Planning it with us
VIP and hospitality only. At the Garden we arrange premium seats, club access and suites, game by game or concert by concert. We do not sell general admission or standard tickets; those are sold by each organiser directly.
Send us the date or dates, the size of the party, the kind of seat and the occasion. We confirm what is available in writing before you commit. Message the concierge on WhatsApp to start.
