Christmas in New York is the city at its most theatrical, and also at its most crowded. Hotel rooms, restaurant tables and the best seats for the big shows are all in demand at the same time, so the winners are the people who decide early. This guide sets out the dates that matter for Christmas 2026, what is fixed and what is still to be confirmed, and how a long weekend or a week can be organised around them. It is editorial guidance, not a price list.
The dates at a glance
Three dates anchor the season. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes runs at Radio City Music Hall from 4 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, according to its producer, with 230 performances announced for the run. Rockefeller Center's own website lists the Christmas tree arriving on Saturday 7 November 2026 and the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday 2 December 2026. The start time and broadcast details for the ceremony had not been announced when we checked, so treat them as to be confirmed.
Madison Square Garden hosts the New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL) through the winter, with home games in November, December and January. Individual dates and tip-off or puck-drop times are set by the leagues and published on the teams' official schedules, and we check each date against those pages before we confirm anything.
The Rockettes at Radio City
The Christmas Spectacular is the show most visitors build a trip around. It is staged at Radio City Music Hall on Sixth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets, in the Art Deco auditorium that has hosted the production since 1933. For 2026 the producer has announced a new Rockettes scene, bringing the number of Rockettes numbers to ten, together with new technology that offers different viewpoints of the dancers. Long-standing favourites, including the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, remain.
Because there are several shows a day across the run, the practical question is which date and which time of day suit your party. Weekday afternoons are generally quieter in the streets and easier for families with younger children. Evenings fit better if you want to follow the show with dinner. Weekends in December and the days between Christmas and New Year are the hardest to secure, so if your dates are fixed, those are the performances to ask about first. We arrange seats on request, booked through official channels, and tell you in writing what is available for the date before you commit.
The Rockefeller Center tree
The Norway spruce is delivered to Rockefeller Center in early November and stays dark until the Tree Lighting Ceremony on 2 December. The arrival is itself a small event, and the weeks that follow are when the Fifth Avenue windows, the plaza and the skating rink around the Center are at their most photographed. The ceremony is a broadcast evening with crowds and street closures around the Center, so access is controlled and the area can be hard to reach. If you want to see the tree lit, you do not need to be at the ceremony itself. Visiting on a weekday morning is likely to be far calmer. Check Rockefeller Center's website for the dates it stays lit.
We confirm the access arrangements for the ceremony closer to the date, because the organisers publish them late. If a ceremony evening matters to you, tell us early and we will advise on where to stay in Midtown so that you are on foot rather than in traffic.
Knicks and Rangers at the Garden
Madison Square Garden sits above Penn Station in Midtown, a few blocks from Herald Square, and is the home arena for both the Knicks and the Rangers. A game there is a good way to spend an evening in a city where theatre tickets can be hard to find. Premium seating and hospitality are arranged game by game, on request: you tell us the date, the size of the party and the kind of seat, and we confirm what is available in writing. Seats are bought for the date and transferred to your account, and groups of nine or more are handled on request. Our separate guide explains how premium seating and hospitality work at the Garden.
Plan around the calendar rather than the other way round. A Knicks or Rangers date that falls inside your trip is worth securing first, as there are far fewer home dates than days in the month. Games and shows can share an evening, so build in time to cross the city, and do not book a dinner on a game night without checking the start time.
A sample shape for the week
A long weekend might be built like this. Arrive on the Thursday and use the first evening for dinner near the hotel. Take the Rockettes on a Friday or Saturday afternoon, keep Saturday evening for dinner, and walk the Center and Fifth Avenue on Sunday morning before the crowds arrive. A week allows a Garden game, a Broadway show, a gallery morning and a day with no plan at all. In December, restaurants set their own booking windows, deposits and cancellation terms, and we pass these on before we request a table.
Where to stay
For a Christmas trip, location matters more than room count. Midtown puts the Rockettes, the Center and the Garden within a short drive or walk. The Upper East Side and Central Park South are quieter and close to the park. Downtown neighbourhoods such as the West Village suit people who prefer low-rise streets, but they add cross-town journeys on show and game nights. Rates peak around Christmas and New Year, and the better rooms go first. See our New York winter guide for neighbourhoods and the holiday season in more detail.
Getting there and getting around
Most international visitors arrive at JFK or Newark, and private flights use Teterboro in New Jersey, which is the main business aviation airport for the city. Our page on private jets to New York explains the airports. In winter, snow and holiday traffic change journey times, so a car is arranged in advance and the arrival is tracked. On show and game nights, ask your driver to plan the pick-up point, as streets around Radio City and the Garden are busy.
What to book first
Put things in this order: flights and hotel, then the Rockettes date, then any Knicks or Rangers game, then dinners. The month view of our events calendar for November 2026 shows what is on, and the December and January views follow. If you are flying with children, check school holidays before choosing dates, and if you are combining the trip with a flight home on a private aircraft, our private jet charter guide explains how quotes work.
Planning it with us
VIP and hospitality only. For the Christmas Spectacular and games at the Garden we arrange premium seats and hospitality, alongside the hotel and the tables. We do not sell general admission or standard tickets; those are sold by each organiser directly.
Tell us your dates, the size of the party and whether you want the Rockettes, a Garden game or both, and we put a plan together and confirm each piece in writing before anything is paid. Message the concierge on WhatsApp to start.
