Al Maktoum or Dubai International: choosing the arrival airport
Most private flights from London now land at Al Maktoum International (DWC) rather than Dubai International (DXB). Both remain open to business aviation. The choice turns on slots, hours and where you are staying.
Al Maktoum (DWC)
DWC’s main runway is 4,500 m, longer than either at DXB. It operates 24 hours with no curfew. Scheduling is coordinated but not slot-limited, so a delayed London departure rarely costs you the arrival. Five private terminals operate on the field, including ExecuJet, Jetex, Jet Aviation and DC Aviation. DWC is closer to Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Jebel Ali. It is about 40 minutes from the city and just over an hour from Abu Dhabi.
Dubai International (DXB)
DXB has been fully slot-coordinated since 2010, and private operators can be penalised when a flight misses its slot. October to April is peak season, when capacity is tightest. DXB makes sense for Deira and the Creek, or for a connection to an airline flight. For Downtown the two airports are roughly equidistant. Business aviation at DXB runs through just two handlers, and larger jets staying beyond 24 hours may be moved to DWC.
Paperwork and the London end
Landing permits for non-scheduled flights are issued by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, whichever airport you choose. At Farnborough, the declared take-off run of 6,768 ft is checked for a heavy jet departing full of fuel for a nonstop leg.
