One wind shapes every boat day on Mykonos. It decides which anchorages work, what time you leave and how the crossing back feels.
The meltemi
The meltemi is a dry northerly that blows across the Aegean from late May to September. It is strongest from June to August, when the Cyclades often see force 7 to 8.
It follows a daily pattern. Mornings are lighter, around 11 to 16 knots. It builds to 22 to 27 knots through the afternoon and eases at night.
The seas it raises are short and steep. Crews then keep the boat in the lee of the island or stay in port.
What that means for the day
The south-coast beach clubs face away from the wind. That is why Psarou and the bays near Nammos stay calm when the north coast is white.
Captains leave early and plan any open-water leg for the morning. A larger, heavier boat makes a windy afternoon far more comfortable, so in August we size up rather than down.
Delos and Rhenia
Delos is a protected archaeological site under the Greek Ministry of Culture. Private yachts may not moor there or stay overnight without official permission.
Rhenia, just across the channel, is where yachts wait. Its empty bays are open to private boats.
On a strong evening it can be kinder to reach the sunset at Scorpios by car and keep the boat for the morning.
