Renting a catered chalet in St Moritz, properly

Suvretta is the quiet, wooded side and where most of the serious houses sit. Via Serlas puts you beside Badrutt’s and the shops, which is the right call if the town is the point. Champfèr is a few minutes out and buys noticeably more house for the money.

Chalet or the Palace

Badrutt’s Palace is the address and carries a CHF 1,800 guide, and for two people it is often the simpler answer. For a group, a catered chalet is quieter, better value per head and puts the chef in your own kitchen — while still leaving the Palace and King’s Social House a short drive away for the evening.

Which weeks, honestly

The season runs December to early April. Christmas to mid-February is loudest, and the White Turf race weekends in February fill the valley entirely. If you want the mountain rather than the scene, late March gives you sun, space and far better availability for the same standard of house.

Getting to St Moritz, and the fixtures that fill the valley

St Moritz sits high in the Engadin, well away from the airline airports, so the arrival needs more thought.

Samedan and the alternatives

Engadin Airport at Samedan is about 5 km from St Moritz. At 1,707 metres it is one of the highest airports in Europe. Its runway is 1,800 m long, but there is no instrument landing system, and the valley’s winds and thin air make it demanding. The nearest airline airports, Zurich, Milan Malpensa and Lugano, are each more than 180 km away. A jet to Samedan, or a helicopter from Zurich, saves most of that drive.

White Turf 2027

White Turf is horse racing on the frozen lake, Lej da San Murezzan. In 2027 the race days are the Sundays of 7, 14 and 21 February, with family days on the Saturdays before. Racing runs from about 10:30 to 16:30. Those three weekends fill the town, so chalets for them are booked first.

The Cresta Run

The Cresta Run is a natural ice track of about 1.2 km between St Moritz and Celerina. It is run by the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club, founded in 1887. The track opens when the weather allows, usually from December to late February or March. Women have been admitted as full riders since 2018.
