For men that means a collared shirt or a good knit, tailored trousers or dark denim without rips, and a clean leather shoe or a considered trainer. A jacket is never wrong here and is the safer call for a Friday or Saturday dinner. For women, anything from tailored separates to a dress works; the room is more Parisian than Riviera, so understated reads better than flashy.

What actually gets turned away: sportswear, football shirts, beachwear, flip-flops and gym trainers. Shorts are tolerated at lunch in high summer and are a risk in the evening. Weekday lunch

Weekday lunch runs from noon until 2.30pm and draws people from the offices of the Triangle d'Or. A suit without a tie fits in naturally. So does a blazer over an open shirt. Many guests come straight from meetings, and nobody expects a change of clothes.

Sunday brunch and the terrace

The Sunday brunch is the most relaxed sitting of the week, and families with children are common. Clean, smart weekend clothes are enough. In summer the seasonal terrace on rue Marbeuf suits linen and lighter fabrics. Children dressed neatly will not draw comment.

Friday and Saturday dinner

Dinner at the weekend begins at 7.30pm and runs until 11.30pm, and it is the dressiest service. Under the 1900 glass roof, evening light catches the mirrors and gilding. Darker tailoring and a good shoe suit the setting. Women tend towards a dress or sharp separates rather than anything casual.

After dinner

Plan for where the night goes next. Moving on to L'Arc or Boum Boum? Dress for that stricter door rather than for dinner. Valet parking at the entrance means a car can wait, so heels and a coat are no hardship.

Arriving from the airport
