Le Plongeoir is smart casual and genuinely means it — this is the most relaxed of the rooms in this group. It sits on the old diving platform off 60 boulevard Franck Pilatte, east of the port, reached by a walkway over the water, and the setting is the point rather than the formality.

Linen, a good shirt, loafers or clean trainers all work. Men do not need a jacket at lunch and rarely wear one at dinner. Women's dress runs summer-Riviera rather than evening-formal. The one practical note: it is exposed and it is windy, so anything that needs holding down is a poor choice.

Refused: swimwear without a cover-up, and visibly beach-state dress at dinner. Given the location, people do arrive from the water — a shirt over swim shorts is fine at lunch and not at dinner.

Getting down to the rock

You reach the restaurant by a pier and a flight of stairs above the water. Flat shoes or low block heels are safer than stilettos on the steps. A lift is available, which helps anyone in heels or with limited mobility.

On the platform

Le Plongeoir itself is the open platform over the sea. Sea air and spray are part of the table. Choose clothes that can take a breeze and a little salt, and tie back long hair.

In Le Rocher

Le Rocher has a heated, enclosed section for cooler months. Inside it, a shirt or a light dress is comfortable even in March or November. On the open part of the rock, dress as for the platform.

Lunch versus the early evening

The kitchen serves from noon to 9.30pm. Lunch is the most relaxed: linen, a polo, a summer dress. The sunset tables are dressier, with a good shirt, a light jacket or a silk dress. Even in July the sea air cools quickly once the sun drops.

Le Vivier lounge

The lounge bar, open from late May to late September with DJs, is the most casual corner. Afternoon resort clothes are fine there, though swimwear alone is not.

Spring and autumn

The season runs from mid-March to mid-November. In March, April, October and November, bring a proper coat or a warm knit. The view is as good, and the wind on the rock is real.
