Méribel and the 3 Vallées in winter 2026/27

Méribel sits in the middle of the largest linked ski area in the world, between Courchevel and Val Thorens. It is the practical choice for a group that wants a big mountain, good chalets and a less formal week than Courchevel 1850.

Snow-covered Alpine village in winter

The resort

Méribel is built along the Allues valley in the Tarentaise, and its centre sits at around 1,450 m, with Mottaret higher up at about 1,750 m for direct access to the pistes. The chalet architecture is strictly regulated, which keeps it low-rise and wooden. It is popular with British families and groups.

The 3 Vallées

The 3 Vallées links Méribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville on one lift pass, and is widely marketed as about 600 km of pistes. Méribel's position is the point: you can ski to Courchevel for lunch or to Val Thorens for the high snow without a car. Figures for runs and lifts vary by publisher.

Which base suits whom

Méribel Centre suits guests who want shops, restaurants and an evening on foot. Mottaret, higher up, is the ski-in, ski-out choice for families and keen skiers who would rather be on the first lift than near the bars. The valley between them is long enough that the base matters, so we ask what the evenings should look like before we suggest a chalet. Because the lift pass covers the whole 3 Vallées, none of these choices closes off the rest of the area.

What is unusual about the area

The 3 Vallées is the point of Méribel. Val Thorens opens first, on 21 November 2026 according to the official lift page, and closes on 2 May 2027, so it is the fallback if snow is short at lower levels. Méribel itself is strictly regulated for architecture, which is why it feels low-rise and wooden rather than like a purpose-built resort.

Season dates

The official 3 Vallées lift page lists Méribel opening on 5 December 2026 and closing on 18 April 2027. On the same page Courchevel opens on 4 December 2026, and Val Thorens on 21 November 2026 with a 2 May 2027 close. These are planned dates and move with the snow, so we check them again closer to your arrival.

The weeks that matter

Méribel opens on 5 December 2026 and closes on 18 April 2027 according to the lift page, and Easter falls on 28 March 2027, so a late-March week is well inside the season. Christmas and New Year sell first: at the top end Christmas is largely booked and New Year availability is very limited at the time of writing (October 2026). English half-term is the week of 15 to 19 February 2027 according to council term-date pages, and the French school zones also holiday across February, which makes the whole month busy. Early January and March are quieter and better value. For Christmas and February, start in the autumn.

Where to stay

Méribel Centre is the lively base, with shops, restaurants and the Altiport side nearby. Mottaret is the ski-in, ski-out choice, with fewer evenings out. The Rond-Point des Pistes area gives quick access to the lifts. For groups we usually recommend a staffed chalet, which gives you a chef, a manager and an in-resort driver.

Catered chalets and what they cost

At the time of writing (October 2026), top-end fully catered chalets in Méribel for winter 2026/27 run from about €22,930 to €127,890 per chalet per week, fully staffed with a private chef, chalet manager, hosts, in-resort driver, wine-paired dinners five nights a week and an open bar. That starts well below the Courchevel 1850 and Val d'Isère ranges for a comparable level of service. Christmas is largely booked at the top end and New Year availability is very limited. The catered chalet comparison sets the three resorts side by side.

Getting there

Most guests fly into Geneva or Chambéry and transfer by road into the Tarentaise valley. The nearest main-line station is Moûtiers, and Eurostar publishes a winter ski train service from London to Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice: check Eurostar for this season's dates. Saturday changeover days are slow on every route. For Geneva to the 3 Vallées by road and helicopter, our Geneva to Courchevel transfer guide sets out the options; the same valley road serves Méribel, but confirm the exact timing at booking.

Hotel, apartment or catered chalet

For a group of six or more, a staffed chalet is usually the right answer. A couple or a small family may prefer a hotel with a spa and no housekeeping, and an apartment paired with a private chef gives a family space at a lower cost. We place staffed houses through the villas and chalets desk and check availability where we book.

Helicopter and private aircraft

Helicopter transfers into the valley are quoted on request, with a road car held as the fallback because flights depend on the weather. See helicopter transfers and our Geneva page for private arrivals.

Dinner and the rest of the week

How we help

We match the base, the chalet and the week to your group, confirm opening dates with the lift company nearer your arrival, arrange a fixed-quote car, and request restaurant tables through each restaurant's own channels. See also the Courchevel ski week experience next door.
