Landing at Courchevel altiport: the slope, the Geneva end and the drive in
Courchevel altiport sits at 2,008 m at Pralong, about two kilometres south of the centre of Courchevel 1850. Its runway is 537 m long and climbs at up to 18.66 per cent, so aeroplanes land uphill and take off downhill. Helicopters use a grassed pad beside it. The commune that runs the site puts them at around 70 per cent of traffic.
Fewer than a hundred pilots hold the mountain qualification the altiport demands, and operations are visual only. That is why the go or no-go decision is made on the morning, and why the road plan stays live until you are airborne.
Which side of Geneva you leave from
Geneva airport is busy, and helicopter landing permissions there are limited. Some operators therefore fly from Archamps, a heliport just across the French border, with a car between the two. We confirm the departure point at booking. The driver then meets you at the right door after a jet from London or Lagos.
On the ground at 1850
The runway has been kept clear of snow all winter since 1971. The site has a control tower, two welcome chalets, hangars and fuel. A car takes you down to the hotel or chalet in a few minutes, with skis and boot bags following in the same vehicle.
Thin air at 2,000 m reduces what a light single can lift, so the operator needs passenger and luggage weights in advance. On an H125 that can decide whether a family of five travels together or in two rotations.
When to plan
