Kronenhalle at Rämistrasse 4: rooms, hours and house rules
Kronenhalle stands at Rämistrasse 4, a few steps from Bellevue and close to the Opera House, the Schauspielhaus and the Kunsthaus. Gottlieb and Hulda Zumsteg opened it in 1924 on the site of the old Hotel de la Couronne. Their son Gustav built up the art collection until his death in 2005. The Hulda und Gustav Zumsteg foundation, set up in 1985, now runs the house.
Three dining rooms and a bar
Diners are seated in the Brasserie, the Chagall room or the Swiss Gallery. The Chagall room and entrance carry works by Chagall, Miró, Braque, Kandinsky, Bonnard and Picasso. Cuno Amiet's portrait of James Joyce hangs by the main entrance. The bar next door was designed by Robert Haussmann, with lamps by Diego Giacometti. It takes no reservations and stays open until 12.30am at weekends.
Hours that suit a working day
The restaurant is open every day, including Sunday, from noon to midnight. The kitchen serves hot food without a break from noon to 10.30pm. That makes a late lunch or an early dinner after a 4pm meeting straightforward. The menu stays with Swiss and French classics: Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, Wiener schnitzel, Chateaubriand and chocolate mousse.
House rules worth briefing guests on
- No photography or filming anywhere in the restaurant.

- Smokers use the first-floor fumoir, for breaks of no more than fifteen minutes.
