Silencio is at 142 Rue Montmartre in the 2nd arrondissement, on the corner of Rue du Croissant. It sits in the old newspaper district between the Grands Boulevards and Sentier, not in Pigalle. A car can set down on Rue Montmartre at the discreet street door, and Grands Boulevards Métro is close by.
The building
The club occupies the basements of former newspaper printworks. L'Aurore was printed here, including the 1898 edition carrying Zola's "J'accuse". The space covers around 700 square metres below ground.
The rooms
The interior was designed by the filmmaker David Lynch and opened in 2011. Rooms are lined with gold leaf and furnished in a retro-futurist style. There is a small cinema, a library, a bar and restaurant, and a stage framed like an old picture house with sliding curtains. The dancefloor sits at the foot of that stage.
Members first, then the public
Until midnight Silencio is a private club, with screenings, talks, concerts and exhibitions for members and their guests. After midnight it opens to non-members as a club night. The door remains selective, and guests must be over 18 and smartly dressed.
Who it suits
Silencio suits guests who like a cultural evening that turns late, rather than a pure table-service club. An introduction through a member allows the earlier programme to be enjoyed too. A booking after midnight is the simpler route for a visitor.
