The rules that shape a touring year: residence days, borders and licensed protection
For a client whose year is a fixture list, the hard constraints are often legal rather than practical. Three of them shape most of the planning we do.
Counting days in the UK
UK tax residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test. Spending 183 days or more in the UK in a tax year makes you automatically resident.
At the other end, fewer than 16 days usually makes you automatically non-resident. The figure is 46 days if you were not resident in any of the previous three years.
A further test covers people working full-time abroad. It applies if they spend fewer than 91 days in the UK and work on no more than 30 of them.
Everyone in between falls to the sufficient ties test, which weighs family, accommodation and work against days spent here. Moving mid-year can split the tax year in two.
None of this is advice, and your own advisers make the judgement. We keep a dated record of the journeys we arrange. A tight calendar can then be checked before a trip is booked, not after.
Crossing into Europe
Since April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System has fully replaced passport stamping for non-EU travellers, British citizens included. It records each entry and exit at the Schengen border.
The 90-days-in-180 limit is now counted automatically. The separate ETIAS travel authorisation is expected in 2027 and will last three years.
Visiting staff and guests coming the other way may need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. It does not guarantee entry at the border.
Licensed close protection
In the UK, close protection is a licensed activity under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, regulated by the Security Industry Authority. Working without the licence carries up to six months in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
Ask to see the licence for every operative on a UK detail. A reputable provider expects the question.
