Royal Ascot dress code

At Ascot the dress code is not guidance. It is a condition of entry, and people are turned away every day of the meeting.

Queen Anne Enclosure

Women: a hat, or a headpiece with a solid base of at least 10cm. Dresses and skirts of modest length, falling just above the knee or longer. Straps of at least 2.5cm. Trouser suits are acceptable. Not permitted: strapless, off-the-shoulder, halter-neck or spaghetti-strap dresses, bare midriffs, sheer straps.

Men: a full-length suit with a shirt and tie. Socks covering the ankle. Not permitted: shorts, trainers, T-shirts, no tie.

Royal Enclosure

Women: formal day dress with a hat — headpieces must have a solid base of 10cm or more. Dresses and skirts just above the knee or longer; straps of 2.5cm or more; jackets and pashminas may be worn but the dress underneath must comply on its own.

Men: black or grey morning dress with a waistcoat and tie, a black or grey top hat, and black shoes with socks. Cravats are not permitted. The top hat may be removed inside a restaurant, a private box or a private club.

Village and Windsor Enclosures

The Village Enclosure asks for a hat, headpiece or fascinator for women and a jacket with collared shirt and tie for men. The Windsor Enclosure is the most relaxed — smart daywear encouraged, no formal rule.

What gets people turned away

A fascinator with no solid base in the Queen Anne Enclosure. A dress that is technically long enough but has straps under 2.5cm. A cravat instead of a tie in the Royal Enclosure. Ankle socks. Every one of these is a real refusal we have seen at the gate.
