La Guérite Cannes dress code, in detail

Beach chic, and on an island that means something specific: you arrive by boat, so resort dressing that survives a tender crossing is the right call. Linen, kaftans, espadrilles.

There is no jacket requirement and no formality, but the room is dressed and photographed. Swimwear alone does not work at the table; a cover-up does.

What stands out badly: full beachwear at lunch service and anything that looks like it came straight off a sunbed. During the Festival the standard rises noticeably.

The crossing

The restaurant shuttle leaves from the harbour master's office at Port Canto, and you step down into a boat. Flat soles with some grip are safer than heels or smooth leather on a wet deck. Choose fabrics that do not mind a little spray.

On the sand before lunch

The restaurant has its own sunbeds on the sand, so swimwear is normal there. Bring a hat, sunglasses and proper sun protection for the morning. Keep a cover-up in the bag for the walk to the table.

Lunch at the table

Lunch runs from midday well into the afternoon. For men, a linen shirt with tailored shorts or light trousers. For women, a kaftan, a sundress or loose linen. Sandals rather than trainers; much of the day is spent on sand.

Saturday dinners in July and August

Dinner is served only on Saturdays in high summer, and it is the one time the island dresses up. Think a crisp shirt and linen trousers, or a long dress with flat sandals that still look smart. The boat home crosses in the dark, so carry a light knit or a shawl.

Festival fortnight

During the Film Festival the shuttle runs from Mouré Rouge instead of Port Canto. Guests going on to an evening event usually leave a change of clothes on the yacht or in the car.

What to bring, and what to leave

Keep bags small for the boat. A dry bag for phones is sensible if you are coming by tender from a yacht. Leave fine jewellery for the evening; it is a day of sand and sea water.
